What is Skype??

Technically, it's VoIP ( Voice calls over your computer Internet).

but the best answer is the one from Skype's website itself.

Skype keeps you in touch with family, no matter where they are..almost. (not in China. That government is so afraid of communication with the Internet.) Our military families are able to see each other, and feel closer when they can use it.

You can use Skype on your iPhone or your computer. It's free to speak, see and instant message. If you pay a little more, or get a subscription, you can do more; like conference calls, and calling nonSkype phones.

For Family and Friends

Calling is wonderful to hear their voices.. but seeing them in real time is priceless. My daughter can keep in touch with her sons. If I'm ill, they call so they can see for themselves just how serious it is. Video calling is great! The webcam which is set up on our computers is what makes the seeing possible. New computers have them built in, but if it isn't, a webcam can be purchased separately very reasonably priced.

My sons get together to play online games, when one is in Australia, one in Texas, one in New Mexico and a cousin in Florida.

The company takes privacy and security very seriously, and encourages you to do the same with strongly formed passwords., and shows you how. There are no ads, no spyware, and they teach you how to spot frauds..

For Business

Skype is turning out to be a very useful business and legal tool as well. Travel to meetings is not required any longer, to still be face to face. Recently, two young people from the British Isles were in the US on a summer job, when they were killed by a drunk driver. Their families were not able to come over for the court proceedings against him, but of course, they wanted to hear every word. A laptop with Skype was setup in the courtroom for their benefit.

There are other services for making phone calls with your computer.. but Skype is so good, and so simple to use, it gets my complete recommendation. It's a free download.. so get it working as soon as you can!
