Recyling old electronics is becoming more and more important.. so what do you do with your 'old' stuff??? And why should you care??
First, try to sell working older electronics on Craig's List! It might be just what someone else needs. Describe it accurately, or find someone who can. Dealing locally is reassuring and quick. Keep the price low, so someone else can benefit.
Most important is to realize that electronics: batteries, MP3 players , cell phones, game consoles, computers, monitors , etc., contain two important classes of materials: that which can be useful again..(hence, recycling) and that which is harmful to our earth and drinking water.
Never, never just put them out in a country trash pile. If you have community trash pickup, find out when and where to dispose of electronics. Look in the information pages of your phone book. There will usually be one day a month, or a specially designated place for 'hazardous waste'. We must eliminate the danger of contamination to our water.
Many computer manufacturers, TV manufacturers, and electronics retailers offer some kind of take back program or sponsor recycling events.
http://www.ecyclingcentral.com It has helpful information for all the states. Call your local Thrift Store or Goodwill to check their policy. There are so many computers being replaced, they may be too crowded.
But what about those that can be used again, saving on manufacturing costs, and gases? One website which can help is called www.gazelle.com Large companies, such as Costco, Sears and Target have partnered to exchange merchandise cards or cash for electronics that are in working condition. Another site is flipswap.com which pays cash for cell phones.
You tell them exactly the model and condition of what you have. If they say it has market value, you box it up and send it to them. They will send you an email when it is received and inspected, and again when they send your payment. If it's in good shape, they resell it on Ebay and Amazon. (So why can't I sell it myself?? You can. Most folks don't.)
Of course, this if good if your shipping costs are less than what they'll pay, so cell phones are a good deal. Don't think I'd try to ship that monitor, though, so try Craig's List to sell, OR box it carefully to take to the hazardous waste dump.
