How to Download

What is it?

A process by which a file, either a program, game or book, is sent to your computer from a remote server, with your permission! Why do this?? "

• To try out a new program
• To be able to read the material more easily than a web page
• To be able to PRINT it out in booklet form

What types of files?

PDF is the format for ebooks, etc. . A PDF reader is required. Adobe Reader is usually already installed on your machine. If not, there is usually a button where you can start its download.

The applications, and games are "executable" files, which means they interact with your computer. These type of file can be dangerous, but not usually. This is how viruses, and other nasty things are put into your computer without your knowing it.

The daily updates to your Anti-virus software are also downloaded.

When should I do it?

• AFTER you have read all about it
• you know the price of it
• and IF you think you can trust the site.

Sometimes, it's the only way you can get the program or book. If there's a disk that can be mailed to you, that's safer.

Several special sites are trustworthy, such as www.tucows.comand www.cnet.com. They test the files before putting the links up on their sites.

When NOT to.

You can't ever be really sure about the safety of the site, so it's a matter of how important the risk is to you..

Be very suspicious of videos, trial games. They can install lots of other junk on your computer, including viruses. This is one of the main reasons why your computer will start to slow down, gradually, day by day. To fix this, you need to download a Registry Cleaner program.

If you download games a lot, be sure that your Anti-virus and Spyware protection are ALWAYS up to date. Often you can VIEW a video, (especially in your eMail) without Downloading to your computer.

IF it's for SALE, and you don't want to pay for it. Often there is a free trial version, that has a limited time. Be careful which button you push. Some sites can have a very misleading design.

Important to know:

• Approx How long it will take
• where it is going to be saved on your disk.

Usually in C: /Downloads.. but there can be other places. As it starts, it should tell you.

How to Download:

When you click the Download button, sometimes it will take you to another page, and a link to the Server Site. Generally, these are the steps that happen when downloading a program, such as a Registry Cleaner:

• Click Download
• Run or SAVE?
  (This will leave files in a temporary place, or save them to your disk.)
• Window opens showing the download status bar, loading it to a Temporary Folder
• Answer again: to Run the file
• Answer again: to SetUp the program
• CLick on I AGREE to the Terms
• It will show in what Directory the program will be placed, (Usually better not to change this.)
• CLick on the final INSTALL button

The installation usually includes placing a shortcut icon on your desktop.

Sometimes this is much shorter, happening in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
