If it's nice outside..STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER!
Go for a walk, a bike ride.. or whatever you'd like to do for outside enjoyment...
but if it's better to be inside, you can find a lot of ways on your computer to spend some fascinating time (a LOT of time!).
Playing games on the computer is also a great way to become better at using the mouse.
In my classes, one of the ways we start is by playing Solitaire. Learning can be fun, too! But first, you have to learn how to get there.
Start by clicking the START button,
then "All Programs", then "Games." There's enough there to use up a LOT of time: Hearts, FreeCell, etc.. I love Pinball. Just enough noise (which you can turn off), and it requires just a little learning how to do it. When you have the program open, up at the top are three words: Game, Options and Help. Click on those words for the menus. There's a demo under Game, and the controls explained under Options.
After you've explored what's in your computer.. it's time to see what's on the Internet.
To get to these sites, you must double click (that's twice, fast, with the left mouse button) on your Internet "icon" that looks like this:
. This is your tool to see the Internet sites.
Then you have to do a Search for what you would like to play. In the upper right corner is a long box that might have a G beside it. Move your mouse cursor to the box, and click it once. You should see a blinking up and down line. This indicates that the computer is expecting you to type something in the box. Using the keyboard, type Crosswords or Poker, or whatever you'd like to play, then press the ENTER Key once. The next window will show you a list of a LOT of sites that have what you are looking for. Take your pick, and click on the underlined blue "link" words. Go to the SEARCH page to learn more about this procedure.
If you end up somewhere you don't want to be, just move the mouse up to the upper left corner and click on the "Go back arrow". That will take you back to the page before. See, it's easy!
This is a world that never stops!! There's no way I can direct you to all the hobbies. On the Internet, you can find anything about any hobby you can think of. Just use that link or the Search box and you will soon have information about stamps, quilting, woodwork, decoupage, radio controlled planes, or scrapbooking. You'll also have the addresses and phone numbers of suppliers all over the world.
One that a LOT of people enjoy is sharing their digital photos. Taking them is easy, but the creativity starts flowing when you learn how to edit photos and then show them online to the world.
Just a quick line to tell you about my pet hobby, building this website! People all over the world are learning how to do it, and making money at it, too! To Work From Homeis the dream of thousands of people. Just click on the link to find out more.
I think the most amazing thing about the Internet, or the Web, is how people from all over are using it to talk to everyone and anyone about their interests and passions. They can email, or "blog", or make a video and put in on YouTube, but another way is the give and take of people with the same interests in "Forums". This is how we are changing the world.
Social Networking Sites
You've heard people talk about Facebook, My Space, Twitter, and new ones every day. What's it all about? It's all about communication. The young people today have grown up with a cellphone in their ear, and an insatiable obsession with talking to each other. The Web allows them to not only talk, but send pictures, etc.. usually from their phones! It allows parents to try to keep in touch with what kids, and grandkids far away are doing. If you are homebound, it gives you an opportunity to find a network of friends in cyberspace, and never be lonely. In a time of disaster, it's one more way of reaching people with a warning. AND, last but not least, smart companies have found it a great way to market their businesses. So, in spite of all the kids saying foolish things out there, social networking has become a powerful force.
Internet Dating
When I said "passions".. oh, yes! The Internet Dating sites have caused quite a stir! Both fun and risky at the same time, you must use common sense when putting your information out in public, but even more so, when eventually there comes the chance to meet. Believe me, it isn't all as sweet as the movie "You've Got Mail!"
You have to remember that people can and do LIE! That beautiful blonde might not be!
On the other hand, there are a lot of couples today who tried it out, and found their mates. It's much less risky than the bar scene, and cheaper too. Just remember, millions of people are looking at everything you say and do!
