Windows has been set up to use a combination of keystrokes as an alternate to moving the mouse up to a menu to make choices.
WHY?There are several reasons for using these shortcuts, the most common being that they are faster. That is important for the millions of people who use the computer at work every day. However, there are other situations that make them important as well.
Many people have finger dexterity problems due to arthritis, etc. and they cannot use a regular mouse.
Finally, what if your mouse suddenly "dies"?. After all, it is only a gadget, and they ALL break sooner or later.
A combination key is when you hold the first key down just long enough to touch another key simultaneously, then letting both go. The sequence is important, and you don't want to hold it more than a second.
The first one I usually teach, is the SAVE combo, used to quickly save a document. Hold down the Control key, press the S key, and let go. That's all there is to it! MUCH FASTER.
A great one for beginners is the UNDO key: Hold down Control key, add Z, then let go. This will undo a mistake you just made. Be careful with it!
Another one I use a lot, is to Exit an application. This closes the program you are using. Hold down the ALT key, then press F4.
See which ones could help you. You can print the list out, after you click on this link: Windows Combination Keys
...and here is a special one: a "triple-doozy"! If your computer suddenly seems to have "frozen" (meaning the mouse won't work!), use both hands to press and hold in order: Contrl+ALT+ Delete, then let go. A window will pop up giving you several options, from which you can choose by using the directional arrow keys. This is a way to shut down and start over, or to go to a list of applications and stop the one that is causing the trouble. Try it sometime..
