Win 7 Start Button

Windows 7 Start Menu

The Windows 7 "pearl" isn't marked "START" anymore but it is where you start .

Customizing the Windows 7 Start Menu can help you by

  • Getting quickly to the place you want to be
  • Keeping your Desktop uncluttered with too many icons
  • Taking you immediately to a particular document
  • Or taking you to the correct "Library" or Control you need
  • Or FINDING what you want on the computer

The Left Panel

The left panel is designed to keep the programs you use the most on a list for your convenience. instead of 4 clicks you would need while stepping through the complete path:

  1. Start
  2. All Programs
  3. Choose the Folder
  4. Click on the program's starter file
Using this panel, gives you access in two clicks.. We all want to save that nano-second, with instant access.
Drag the program titles that you use often over to it, and delete the ones you don't. They're only shortcuts, so it doesn't delete the program.

The Right Panel

At the top of the right panel, is the icon or picture of the current user. If you click on it, you will be taken to a screen to change your User Settings. As you mouse over the other items, it will change to represent that selected folder.

The right panel takes you to more advanced settings, the controls of how your particular computer can work. It will be to your benefit to go through these with someone who know how they operate. Warning: Don't make changes unless you KNOW what will happen with the change.

Search Box:

This is how to find ANY document you have on your computer. As we get more and more information, it becomes harder to find. The old folders and files are getting very clunky, requiring to step down many levels.

A better system is to use TAGS or LABELS. When you create (write) a letter, spreadsheet, etc. when you save the FIRST time to give the file a name, there is also a place to add a tag. It's good to think of at least 3 words or phrases you would use to search for items about the topic. This is especially valuable to search and find photos. Tag them with the names of every person in the photo, or the location, or the event.

Shut Down:

The little black arrow to the right gives you five other choices:, the most useful of which are: Sleep, when you're going away for several minutes, but want to get right back to work in the same place, or Restart, used after you've installed a new program, or cleaned the hard disk.
