Contact with our friends and family.. that's what's important. The Web is all about communication and contact.. and every day there are more ways to do this, and it's changing all the time.
We started out with Email. Now everyone has an email address or two. Our "inboxes" immediately filled up, usually with junk mail we didn't need or want.. just like our real mailboxes. Advertising saw the opportunity, and soon, we learned to be a lot more careful about who we gave our email address to. Now it's the standard way of identifying oneself. We have personal email and business email.
Then came webcams! SKype made it possible to talk with our friends and family and SEE them at the same time. Granmas were able to keep that closeness with their family even at great distance. Our military were able to stay in touch, and their children didn't forget who they were.
There are a lot of interesting webcam sites, where you can see what's happening right now, at zoos, and nature sites you would probably never really visit.
Meanwhile, the teenagers caught on immediately when they were offered a place where they could talk to their friends. OMG! Teenagers and talk! From MySpace to Facebook, It happened like an explosion. Not just talk: YouTube and Hulu took the videos of ANYTHING and "went viral"!
The grownups realized this was a new thing that could be useful for making connections, finding jobs (LinkedIn)and maybe, just maybe, finding that perfect someone. Online Dating became a reality, then for some, a nightmare.
As always.. there are bad guys who find opportunities. We had to learn the hard way about the problems of revealing too much to the wrong people. Our very identity could be stolen, and our Online safety was at risk.
Google + has matured the Facebook thing, without it's mistakes, so we can share interests, still keeping control of who we talk to and how. Take an interactive tour, to find out what it's all about. It seems good, even better.. so see you there!
