I know that learning how to use a computer can be frustrating, especially for Seniors. You've been places, done a lot of things.. and it can be uncomfortable to be learning something so entirely different.
It can be exciting and fun, too!

You may even be afraid to do much, because you think you might break it. After all, it IS expensive, and electronic, and …
Not to worry, we'll take all the mystery out of it. I know you want to send email, and watch "YouTube", but please be patient, there are things you need to learn first!

Navigation

Navigation, or moving around, is important to learn right away.
At the top left of your screen is (usually) a large arrow, pointing left, like this: backbutton This is the BACK arrow, and takes you BACK to the page you were reading before. (It's handy for getting out of a awkward place, too.) Certain arrows and buttons are obvious, but some other ones can be quite confusing. Just try clicking on them and pay attention to what happens. You can't break anything.

To the right and at the bottom of the page you will probably see "scroll bars" which you can click with your mouse, and move up, down, left and right. You can use the Keyboard keys that are marked with up and down arrows, too. Play with these tools until you're comfortable seeing the changes. There are exercises to help you on the next page Windows Basics

Here's a most important TIP: If you need the text to be larger, hold down the CTRL key on the keyboard, and at the same time, tap the + (plus) key, then let go.

There are a LOT of pages on the Web that you will want to read, and pictures to see, so the first thing you need to know is that certain words are marked in colors, with a double underline. These words are 'links", and that is the way we move around on the Web to find interesting bits of knowledge.

What IS the Web? See how the word Web is colored and double underlined? Click on it to go to a page explaining about the World Wide Web,which is also known as the Internet. Remember to use the BACK arrow to come back. Pages you need to read at the beginning are:

  1. First
  2. Windows Basics
  3. Terms
They are listed over in the left hand "panel", and you can click on the word links there.
and to tease your appetite, below are some of the places that you will go~

Stop the Frustration, by learning HOW to use your computer!

  • What all those "extra" keys and buttons are for..

  • How to keep your computer running well with goodMaintenance.
